what
would you want the show to be like?

As part of our Solid Gold 2000 contest giveaway, we asked fans to write in and explain how they would want THE ideal Solid Gold reunion show to be! The winner was randomly selected and recieved a copy of a 1985 TV Guide issue that featured the Solid Gold Dancers. Many thanks to the people who participated in this contest. Here are the results!
Well I'd like to see a reunion show where there'll be plenty of fun, nostalgia... and humor! So the best way to do it is capture ALL popular segments of the show with a little old footage and the rest of each of the segments could use young dancers and look-alike hosts who would send-up some of the fashions and songs of the era. (You can get away with a lot more of the goofy memories of the 80s if it's done in a funny way). Thus segments such as the top 10 countdown could still capture their original fun, excitement and anticipation! Marilyn McCoo, Dionne Warwick amongst others should host the show, with a little video tribute to all the hosts and especially Andy Gibb who was probably one of the most loved yet would be conspicuously absent for the year 2000. It is a great idea to use some of the original dancers. They could all tell us what they're up to in this day and age.
Here's my idea of what the show should look like. They should have Marilyn McCoo host the show and they should have Shania Twain, 'NSYNC, the Bee Gees and also bring back all of the Solid Gold dancers. The show should be filmed in Las Vegas and should be about 2 hours long. The title should be called Solid Gold 2000. The Solid Gold countdown should be featured the same way it did in 1985 with the solid gold dancers dancing and the announcer says what the number 1 hit is and the special should be showing some music videos.
Title: "A Solid Gold Millennium Celebration"
Theme: A two-hour special showcasing number one songs from the past twenty years and celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the original airing of Solid Gold. Ok, maybe 3-4 hours!!
Filming Location: Disney Studios in Orlando, Fl.
Dancers: Bring back "ALL" of the dancers that were on the show.
Host: Dionne Warwick, Marilyn McCoo, Rex Smith, Rick Dees, and Nina Blackwood. Bring them all back!!
Special Segments: "Where Are They Now" on the dancers, hosts, and original choreographers. I would also show clips of the original dancers auditioning for Solid Gold.
Artist: This could be a long list!! Definitely bring back artists who had number one songs from the 80's and 90's. Countdown: New dancers would countdown the number one songs from the past 20 years choreographed by Paula Abdul. I would have the hosts and original dancers introduce the countdown.
It should be hosted by someone who originally appeared on Solid Gold but is not necessarily still the hottest (i.e. I doubt Madonna would agree to appear). So hosts could be Rick Springfield, Olivia Newton John, Boy George, Debbie Gibson or others from the 80's. Perhaps no host at all is necessary. Might even be cool if one of the former dancers like Darcel, Deborah, or Pam was the host. No lip synching this time all music would be live. There should be dancing and a countdown. Maybe of the top 20 songs of the rock era to celebrate the century or the number one songs for the last 20 years (this would give Dionne the chance to come & do "That's What friends are for"). New dancers would need to be hired but for fun the original dancers should do a routine or two. Maybe one of the originals could be the principal dancer for the new show. One of the originals should also do the choreography. I would have flashback segments, some then and now performances; and pop culture stuff from current and original SG guests. These pieces could be introduced by former dancers or singers. I don't see any role for the original hosts except for a campy cameo. As for the set Paramount studios is a likely spot but I wonder how much of the set would be computer generated. Perhaps all of it would be shot on a blue screen using computer graphics of the original long gone set. To finish the show I would have a jam session similar to the ones that Dick Clark regularly did on the bandstand retrospectives. I think the show could air on VH1, as it is owned by Paramount/ Viacom. Also has the best chance of finding an audience on that channel. It would not be a syndicated show (music shows are still out of fashion) and the networks would not touch this , except UPN perhaps due to network synergy. The challenge will be to capture the magic of Solid Gold in a way that appeals to the youth of today.
Here is what I think "Solid Gold 2000" should be like. The show would be aired live for two hours in Las Vegas at the MGM. Marilyn McCoo and Dionne Warwick would be your hosts for the show (don't ever bring back Rick Dees). The dancers to bring back are Darcel, Deborah, Gayle, Pam, Beverly, Eileen, Mark and Cooley and they would dance to the number one songs from each year that Solid Gold was on the air 1980-1988. They would also share their memories from the show. The acts would include Culture Club, Men at Work, Tears for Fears, the Police, the Fixx, U2, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Hall and Oates, Phil Collins, Genesis, Sheena Easton, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Bananarama, the Cars, the Go-Gos, Michael Jackson and anyone else who sang "We are the World." The show would have the same original setting. The only other thing besides Rick Dees to not bring back to the show are people lip-syncing to the songs in the Solid Gold countdown.
